CUNA Security Notification (December 2005) Credit Union National Association (CUNA) "Phished" CUNA, NOT CUNA Mutual Group, is continually being used as the subject of a phishing message targeting your credit union members to collect personal account information, plastic card numbers and passwords. Fraudulent Email: NCUA Account Review (April 2004) Recently, there have been multiple e-mail fraud attempts, known as "Phishing”, that were initiated via e-mail sent to both the general public and to some credit union members that appeared to be from NCUA. This false e-mail asked for the recipient to click on a link to verify their credit union account registration. If the recipient proceeded to do so, the link directed them to a false website and asked for their credit union account number and PIN, along with other personal information. Fictitious IRS Forms and Financial Institution Letters (April 2004) The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has issued a nationwide alert regarding fake letters and tax forms are going to account holders in an effort to obtain personal financial information. Click here for the full story

Fraudulent Email: FDIC Warning (April 2004) Credit unions report their members are receiving emails that fraudulently claim to be from the FDIC, and these emails attempt to obtain highly sensitive personal information, including bank account information. Fraudulent Email: Granite State Credit Union (2003) Please be aware of the following Phishing Scam. This e-mail has not been issued by Granite State Credit Union. An e-mail of this nature would not be sent by your credit union. This e-mail is a "phishing" attempt to get personal information. VISA® Cardholders (March 2002) Visa USA Fraud Control has learned of a scam designed to obtain cardholders personal data and account information. Visa reports this activity in Canada, but suspects it may spread to the United States. Click here for the full story

Fraudulent Email: Lottery Scams Have you or someone you know suddenly been receiving e-mails and letters from legitimate sounding lottery organizations that assure you that you are a winner in a lottery drawing recently held? Do they mention that you're in line to receive hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of dollars? This is an old scam, but every time there is a large multi-state “Power Ball” jackpot, the intensity picks up. The prize money varies from e-mail to e-mail. You may even receive an “official check” to deposit, drawn on a foreign bank. The official check may be dated in the future, counterfeit, or drawn on a non-existent financial institution.
