about our team

Kelly Sprague

PARAGON GENERAL MANAGER
Certified Personal Trainer, Yoga, Spin, TRX instructor.

10 years Experience.

I took my first steps on the road to fitness at the age of 30 .  Things were shifting   in my body and not in a good way.  Sitting at a desk all day for many years  without a hint of exercise.  I didn’t know the first thing about working out, and a gym was intimidating.  “Everyone there knew what they were doing” (or so I thought).  Excuses were easy:  having a family, 2 small children, a full time job. The list can be as long as we choose to make it.

As we all know, everyday  life can get in the way.  I was not successful in creating that time for me. It began with the prodding of a friend to “run the boilermaker”.  That followed with a breathless run/walk on a lunch break from work.  I realized just how “out of shape” I really was, and I didn’t like it.  A shift occurred within me at that moment.  I should have been able to run ¼ mile without stopping!!!  I made a choice to “Just commit and do it”.

Fast forward 16 years.   I have run 10 boilermakers  , 3  ½ marathons, 1 full marathon .  The confidence gained from completing a goal is priceless.  My awareness and open-mind was now willing to try so many other things. Yoga has become a passion of mine that will last a life time.  I currently spend my days managing Paragon Athletic Club , helping others achieve their fitness goals.  I invite you to stop by Paragon, try something new, It might just change your life!

Jonathon Barnes

I spent 15 years dancing professionally (modern, musical theatre, jazz, ballet) on the left coast.  Today, I teache high school Earth Science in Utica, operate a small organic vegetable farm in Westmoreland, and teache yoga, play tennis and work out at Paragon Athletic Club.

Every Tuesday evening at 5:15pm, and on occasional Sundays at 10:00am, i teache an all-levels Hatha Yoga class.  The 30 minute "Introduction to Hatha Yoga" segment at our Mini-Health Fair will introduce participants to some of the breathing techniques that are fundamental to a yoga practice, as well as some of the basic postures commonly utilized in a Hatha Yoga practice.

Besides the obvious physical benefits of a yoga practice - improved flexibility, improved muscle tone, enhanced metabolic efficiency - yoga helps us to 'clear our heads', to slow down in a world that is moving too fast, to focus on the here and now, to find physical, mental and spiritual balance.

For my cardiovascular health - the one aspect of wellness that yoga does not impact in a significant way - I play tennis, take step class, and use the cardio machines.  I played tennis as a child/teen, and after a long hiatus, I am absolutely loving being on the court again!  Step class is my favorite whole body workout, and when I can coax myself onto one, I'm always glad that I took 20-30 minutes to give my heart a workout on a cardio machine.  I am so grateful that I can do ALL of these things at Paragon.

I started my farm in 2003.  My motivation was to be in control of at least a part of my food supply, but it almost immediately became a little side business, though 'labor of love' is perhaps a more accurate description.  Until this year I have had a CSA program.  CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and is the format where folks 'subscribe' and buy a full or half share, and pick up their produce once a week during the growing season.  This year finds me needing to back off of that program, but you will be able to find me and my organically grown produce at the Westmoreland Farmer's Market.

about our team

Kim Johnson

PARAGON FITNESS TRAINER

Certified Personal Trainer, Zumba, Piloxing, Spin, Group exercise instructor.

I am a Wife and Mother of 2 children, ages 7 and 12. I have lived in Whitesboro for the past 14 years. I have a College Degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management and worked in Hotel/Restaurant Sales for many years.  It allowed me the opportunity to travel to wonderful locations and of course, eat at great restaurants.  But with that travel came unhealthy eating and many hours just sitting in a car.  Then when my career changed to Retail Management, it meant sitting at a desk for long periods of time. This took its toll on me physically and mentally.

Being inactive was not what I was used to doing.  I was involved in sports my entire life and played volleyball competitively after college.  Fortunately, I have a best friend that changed my life with one statement. “Why don’t you become a group fitness instructor”? The rest is history!  It was time to move and get healthy. So I did! Then I motivated “her” by saying lets become certified Personal Trainers…and we didJ

I have been a Group Fitness Instructor for 7 years and a Personal Trainer for 5 years.

My kids are the reason I continually try to make the best choices in life, including my diet and exercise.  I set goals for myself and try to reach them. I may fail once or twice but it just makes me more motivated to achieve them.

Jack Kunkel

Along with leading a very healthy lifestyle myself, I have devoted my time and energy into helping other individuals achieving this same feat. In fact, I’ve spent the last 15 years of my career helping others as an employee at Kunkel Ambulance where I achieved status as a Nationally Registered Level 4 Paramedic and was a recipient of numerous leadership and achievement awards. This passion and enthusiasm for helping people has helped me lead hundreds of clients towards goals of total body wellness: including help with nutrition, fitness, and increased self-confidence.

Personally, genetic propensities to gain weight (hypothyroid) led me to be an active participant in my own nutritional habits. This led me to a search for credible nutritional education, which has now come to full fruition in my success as a personal wellness advisor. I graduated from Empire State College with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science, and I am an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal and Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Applied Clinical Nutrition at NYCC. I am also a professional body builder, have been featured in interviews, and national magazines, and on fitness websites.

I started playing tennis at the age of 16. It quickly became a passion that I needed to fulfill.  Everyday practice was common place with a thirst to be the best I could be.  At the age of 20, I went to Central Florida Community College in Ocala Fl on a tennis scholarship and was on the 1981 National Championship team.  While there, a shoulder injury was too much to overcome, so I did the next best thing - I became a tennis teaching professional.  I am the former head tennis pro at the Beach and Tennis Club in Bonita Springs Florida and currently spend my days on tennis court 3 at Paragon Athletic Club, doing what I love – playing tennis.  I have been fortunate to have a great staff behind me including Assistant pros – Seth Heacock, Scott Smith, Jim Holland, Corey Snitchler and Tiffany Liephart who exemplifies the philosophy – Tennis should be fun, informative and full of cardio exercise.
