Introducing the Better U Program Series

April 1, 2020

Chapter #1 - Transforming Overall Heart-Health

Any time is a good time to be a better you. Though this program did not originate while knowing a pandemic was about to overtake our lives, perhaps there’s never been a better time to focus on oneself than during this time of quarantine. We’ll get to the stay-at-home part of the challenge soon enough but for now let’s start at the beginning.

First Source is proud to be a part of the American Heart Association’s Better U Program. From 60 submissions, 12 local women were selected to take part in the 10-week program. Our very own Lynne O. is one of them and we couldn’t be prouder. We will be following Lynne along her journey with regular check-ins to share the tips she learns along the way. The program encompasses all aspects of heath which include a nutritionist, physical trainer, wellness coach and more.

When speaking with Lynne, you can feel her emotions. A little apprehension, a lot of gratitude, and excitement for what’s in store.

Her goal for wanting to be a part of the program was to take an educated approach to her well-being. Lynne, like so many has been busy taking care of, and being strong for others. In doing so, she has not been able to take care of herself. Her husband and mother have had challenges that take much of Lynne’s focus. In addition, her mother recently underwent open heart surgery. Lynne has struggled with weight and felt that now was the time to finally focus on her self-care. This opportunity was just the catalyst Lynne needed. "My mom has inspired me to be the best I can,” said Lynne.

Prior to the government mandated COVID-19 health restrictions, we joined Lynne at the program kick off where she met program participants and got a better understanding of the program and expectations. After a healthy meal and lots of water a nurse took their baseline weight and blood pressure, for something to measure against as they progress. The women met their trainer, nutritionist, and wellness coach. They provided information on their current eating habits so that recommendations could be made, got their gym schedule and learned some exciting news. “They told us that upon program completion we would each receive a one-year paid membership to Accelerate Sports Complex”, said Lynne. “I was over the moon. That was an instant motivator for me.” Lynne has also already been challenged to increase water intake and add three fruits and vegetables daily.

The women joined a closed Facebook Group to share information and for program support. Lynne said, “I’m happy to be meeting these women and know I am not alone on this journey.”

We will be following Lynne along her journey with regular check-ins to share the personal tips she discovers along the way. Stay tuned for the next chapter of our Better U Program Series!
