What a Ride: Tom Neumann, EVP, COO reflects on The Ride For Missing Children

June 1, 2010

Describe Your ride experience in one word:
INSPIRATION – The pre-ride meetings included inspiring stories about how families and children dealt with both positive and negative outcomes of missing or exploited children – encouraging me to learn more of how to help or deal with these situations as we emotionally prepared for the ride. The practice rides inspired me to keep training and help other riders as the RFMC training team was ALWAYS there for us – helping us physically prepare for the ride.

What did you take away from Friday’s ride?
I took away a much greater understanding and awareness of the tremendous commitment of all the volunteers, riders, affected families and children to “make our children safer”. It truly was much more than just a bicycle ride.

What missing child did you ride for and do you know their story?
I did not know a specific story. I took the opportunity to meet with one of the affected and recovered children (now an adult) at the closing ceremony – and to thank her for riding and sharing her story with us.

What was your favorite part of the day?
I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the day – my favorite part was riding through all the schools, spending time with the kids, and seeing the impact of the efforts to connect with and educate the elementary school children – every time we connect with them, they learn something more about the mission of making them safer.

Do you plan on riding next year and would you recommend the ride to others?
I definitely plan on riding next year and would recommend the experience to others willing to make the commitment to fully participate in all the pre-ride sessions and training – if you fully participate, you will learn so much about the NCMEC mission – and have great experiences with affected families, children, volunteers and riders that will have a lasting positive impact on your life.
