How to Pay for a New or Used Sled
Why Finance a Snowmobile?
Whether you want one for transportation or just for fun, we live in one of the best regions for snowmobiles. With hundreds of miles of trails and some of the country’s most beautiful wilderness right in our back yards, a sled is a great way to make the most of our long winters and heavy snowfall. There are different types of snowmobiles for recreation, transportation, or work, and with used sleds in the mix, a pretty wide range of prices. You could be looking at $1,000–$2,000 for a used vehicle, and up to $10,000 or more for a new one. With that in mind, financing is an option to get you out on the trails and allow you to pay it off in monthly installments.
Choosing a New or Used Snowmobile
If you’ve never owned a sled before, start by talking to other riders, to get an idea of what will work best for your plans, including the terrain and trails you plan to ride, how much riding you plan to do, and how long you want to keep your machine. Some entry-level models may be better for your budget, some are built for comfort, others more for speed, or hauling, some for rougher trails, and more.
Once you have an idea what you want and need, start shopping, checking different makes and models, and see what works for you. You’ll need insurance, and depending on your age, where you plan to ride, and whether you’re new to the sport, a safety class may be needed before getting started.
Smart Tips: Before You Shop
Before you shop, you’ll want to have a good idea about how much you can afford. New owners should factor in expenses in addition to the snowmobile itself. Make sure you consider costs for:
New storage space at your home
Trailer for transport
Ramp or lift for getting sled onto trailer
Clothing and gear, including helmet, clothes, boots, gloves
Trail Rider Association and Trail Fees (contact your local association for details)
In addition to these, there may be other incidentals to account for along the way, including fuel, maintenance, and repairs. Again, a dealer and friends can help you with average or expected expenses.
