What began as a single initiative has grown into a network of 53 schools across seven counties, all working toward the same goal: ensuring students have what they need to be successful both in and out of school.
Meeting Families Where They Are
Connected Community Schools recognizes that barriers such as food insecurity, access to resources, transportation, childcare, and other everyday challenges can directly impact a student's ability to learn. By connecting families with community resources and support services, the program helps address those needs before they become obstacles.
The conversation highlights how building relationships and creating trusted connections within schools makes it easier for families to find support, ask questions, and access programs designed to help them succeed.
Encouraging Literacy Through Connected Bookworms
One of the many programs discussed in the episode is Connected Bookworms, an initiative focused on improving literacy and fostering a love of reading throughout entire families.
Rather than focusing solely on students, the program encourages family engagement, creating opportunities for parents and children to build stronger reading habits together. The result is a community-centered approach to literacy that extends learning beyond the classroom and into the home.
The Impact Center's Remarkable First Test
Melissa also shares the inspiring story of the Impact Center in Rome. Just days after opening its doors, the center faced an unexpected challenge when a tornado devastated parts of the city.
What was intended to be a community resource quickly became a critical support hub, helping connect residents with needed assistance during a difficult time. The experience demonstrated just how valuable community partnerships can be when families need help the most.
