Your Credit Card, Your Rewards: How to Maximize Both

November 15, 2024

Father and son online shopping.

If you're using a credit card simply because you don’t have cash on hand today—but you will by the time the bill is due and can make your on-time payment—then you’re just scratching the surface of what your card can do. Yes, you’re building good credit by paying on time, which is great—keep it up! But you could be getting so much more…

Almost all credit cards these days offer some type of reward. Anything from cash back, to travel perks, merchandise points, store rebates, and more! How do you choose which card(s) to use?

  1. Identify The Rewards You’ll Actually Use
Start by considering what benefits are most valuable to you. This could be:

    • Cash back you can apply to your credit card payment or use for your next purchase

    • Points that can be redeemed for merchandise, gift cards, or travel

    • Store discounts, rebates, or coupons

    • Travel perks like airline companion passes

    • The list goes on…

  2. Commit To Maximizing The Benefits
Use your card for purchases strategically. By using it consistently (and paying the balance on time, of course), you can rack up rewards. If you only use your card sporadically, you’re missing out on potential rewards.

  3. Take Advantage Of Ongoing & Ever-Changing Promotions
In addition to standard rewards, many cards offer special monthly or quarterly promotions that can multiply your rewards. For example, “Earn 4x points on gas purchases this month” or “3% cash back on home improvement purchases this quarter.” These promotions can help you prioritize which card to use when.
Remember, some promotions are automatic, but others require you to enroll.

  4. Pay Attention To The Fine Print
Some cards have annual fees or spending thresholds to qualify for rewards. Look at the benefits in relation to these fees. Often, the perks outweigh the cost. For example, if a card has a $200 annual fee but offers a subscription credit that offsets this fee, it could be worth it.

  5. Redeem Your Rewards Regularly
Don’t let your hard-earned rewards go to waste. Some rewards expire, so double check the terms and redeem them before they’re lost.
