Paws & Pages: A Heartwarming Reading Program for Kids & Shelter Pets

June 13, 2025

School’s almost out, and we’ve got the perfect way to kick off summer—especially for young readers and animal lovers!

We’re proud to announce the launch of Paws & Pages, a unique reading program developed by First Source Federal Credit Union in partnership with Anita’s Stevens-Swan Humane Society (ASSHS). The program officially kicked off on Wednesday, June 11th, with a celebratory ribbon cutting at the shelter.

Paws & Pages gives kids the opportunity to build their confidence and improve their reading skills in a safe, encouraging, and rewarding way—by reading out loud to shelter animals. The concept was developed by First Source’s Community Engagement Team and Anita Vitullo, ASSHS Board Chair, after learning about a similar initiative in Missouri that had incredible results.

“This has been a true labor of love,” said Pamela Way, Community Engagement Manager at First Source. “We started developing this program over a year ago, and to see it finally launch knowing the good it will do for the animals, kids, and their families is so rewarding. These are the kinds of collaborations we love to undertake.”

How It Works

Parents can register their child to visit the shelter and read to dogs or cats, creating a calm and enriching experience for both. Some animals who might be anxious or shy tend to settle down after hearing a few sentences. Dogs stop barking and come closer, while cats relax and become more still and attentive. Likewise, kids—especially those who may feel self-conscious reading aloud in front of others—find comfort in the judgment-free company of a furry friend.

“It’s a huge win for all parties involved,” shared Anita Vitullo, ASSHS Board Chair. “The animals have been reacting very positively during our pilot testing of the program, and the kids love it and can’t wait to come back.”

Even better? The program is already helping animals find forever homes. “I’m thrilled to say that even just during the pilot phase, we’ve had both cats and dogs adopted because of the reading program,” said Trisha Barone, Executive Director of ASSHS. “This also helps us with different people coming through our doors who may not have before, to meet the animals up for adoption. We could not be more grateful to First Source.”

Program Details

  • Annual Donation: $10 per child, which goes directly toward animal care

  • Includes: A short training session, name badge, punch card, and access to books and colorful reading cushions

  • Rewards: Each visit earns a “paw punch” on the child’s card; once filled, they receive a collectible pin

Before reading to an animal, children are taught how to approach them gently—sitting sideways, moving slowly, and allowing the animal time to adjust. They can choose a book from the shelter’s shelf or bring their own.

For kids, it’s an empowering chance to practice reading while doing something kind. For the animals, it’s a soothing presence in what can be a stressful environment.
