First Source Federal Credit Union and Anita’s Stevens-Swan Humane Society Celebrate One Year of Paws & Pages Reading Program

June 23, 2026

First Source Federal Credit Union is proud to celebrate the one-year anniversary of its Paws & Pages Reading Program, a unique initiative supporting our local youth and shelter animals at Anita’s Stevens-Swan Humane Society.

To mark the milestone, a small celebration was held at the Humane Society, where participating readers were recognized for their dedication to the program. Children in attendance received commemorative one-year anniversary pins, honoring their commitment to improving their reading skills while making a positive impact on the animals they read to. There was also a book signing by author Karen Lombardo.

Originally launched in June 2025, Paws & Pages was developed by First Source’s Community Engagement Team, Pam Way and Mariann Munson, in collaboration with the Humane Society’s Board Chair, Anita Vitullo. The program offers children a supportive, judgment-free environment to practice reading aloud. At the same time, the program provides comfort and enrichment to shelter animals, helping to ease anxiety and promote calm behavior and become more comfortable around people.

Since its launch, the program has continued to grow and thrive. This summer alone, more than 100 children are registered to participate, reflecting the strong community interest and positive impact the program has made over the past year.

“It’s truly incredible to see how much this program has grown in just one year,” said Pamela Way, First Source Community Engagement Manager. “What started as a labor of love has turned into something that is helping children build confidence while also bringing comfort to the animals. Seeing so many kids excited to come back week after week is what it’s all about.”

The program continues to run throughout the summer with the following hours:

  • Tuesdays: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

  • Thursdays: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

  • Saturdays: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Families can register children for a $10 annual donation, which directly supports the care of animals at the Humane Society. Participants receive training, a name badge, and a punch card to track their visits, earning collectible pins along the way. In addition, First Source proudly presented a check for $2,147 from proceeds raised through their spring plant sale. First Source Federal Credit Union remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen the community and foster meaningful connections. The Paws & Pages Reading Program is one example, bringing together children, families, and shelter animals in a way that creates a lasting impact.
