Keeping Kids Healthy

First Source is excited to announce a campaign targeted at reduction and early prevention of obesity in our most vulnerable kids—before it becomes a greater issue as they reach adulthood.

According to the American Heart Association, in the U.S. the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, estimated using NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), is 33.4 percent (16.2 percent were overweight and 17.2 percent were obese). 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese, a condition that affected just 1 in 10 children only 30 years ago!

Fewer than half of all children are getting the physical activity they need to be healthy—a recommendation of at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a day.

Did you know obesity is linked to more chronic conditions than smoking, poverty, and drinking? It is also linked to increasing the risk of more than 20 preventable conditions.

What can we do?

We are committed to changing these staggering statistics, reaching and engaging kids where they live, learn, and play.

Why?

  • Healthy students are better learners; students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance, and classroom behaviors.

  • Higher physical activity and physical fitness levels are associated with improved cognitive performance among students.

  • Healthy, successful students help build strong communities. Investing in the health of students contributes to healthy communities in the future.

All students deserve the opportunity to be healthy and successful. Providing access to healthy foods and physical activity plays an important role in the academic achievement of students.

Join Us

First Source will be raising funds from January to March of this year, to purchase a variety of the most-needed physical education equipment for seven underserved schools in our area. Our branches will serve as fundraising points to aid in bulk purchases of jump ropes, assorted-sized balls, cones, hula hoops, and more to get our kids moving! Our goal of $2,700 would supply all seven schools with the much-needed equipment.

When you stop by a branch, consider donating and join us in helping our community’s kids to Get Moving!
